on Job

A retelling of Job 38 in Iambic Pentameter

Then the Lord spoke to Job out of the storm:
“Who are you to question me and my plans?
Surely you have proof of your vast greatness;
Surely you are man enough to respond.
Where were you when I laid the Earth’s bedrock?
Who sunk its footers and marked its corners,
While the sons of God sang joyful praises?
Did you contain the seas and all’s within,
Giving the waters their limits and tides?
Does the sun rise at your whim and delight?
Do you know where winter resides, is kept
Waiting for the long shadows to appear,
That it might burst forth, taming the scorched land?
Do the wind and waves obey your command?
Even death must bow the knee to your Word!
Oh man, surely you must know all such things
Or you would not have dared question my ways.
But no, I am the Lord, the Sustainer
Of all things great and small – of even you.
